The introduction of Free Primary Education (FPE) in 2003 led to increased enrolment and a very reasonable gender balance. Lower secondary enrolment has also expanded rapidly with the introduction of the Free Day Secondary Education (FDSE) initiative in 2008. Kenya is thus ranked 6th out of 28 African countries on the’ EFA Development Index ranks. However, the challenges faced are also significant.

Our Mandate

The Kenya Education Management Institute (KEMI) is a Semi-Autonomous Government Agency (SAGA) of the Ministry of Education. The Institute is mandated under Legal Notice No.19/2010 to provide management training, conduct research and offer consultancy services to both public and private sectors.
