An investigation of Mjengo School by the Auditors found widespread fraud among parents who allegedly lied about their income so that their children could eat for free in the Free Feeding Program for Orphans and Vulnerable children. The investigation was sparked by a series of reports by County newspapers about the abuse of the Free lunch program. The Auditors found false information on the free lunch program applications submitted from the households of 40 parents in 3 schools. The County Director of Education is considering referring for criminal prosecution the names of the 40 parents who provided false information about their income on the free lunch applications. Among these parents is the Area Chief who allegedly under-reported his household income on his school lunch application. The total amount of under-reported income was Kshs.150, 000/-. It was also noted that there is minimal oversight, resulting in parents frequently lying on program applications about income amounts.
